The First Farewell
A preview (?)
Can and Ayse, the two other volunteers from Turkey, started their EVS last year in November. That means their stay in Hungary is nearly over now. To spend the last two days together, we - Sebastian, Zsofi, Can, Ayse and me - go on a little trip to the western end of the Balaton.
Our first aim is Festetics Castle, a magnificent baroque building where one of the high nobility families of Hungary - the Festetics, related to House Hohenzollern from Germany for a few generations now - lived. The castle is surrounded by a few museums, including a hunting trophy exhibition, a big model railway layout and a carriage museum where you can also see an original Tin Lizzie from 1914.
We spend the whole day on the castle grounds and in the museums around, then take a short detour to the ruins of the Szigliget Fortress before going to our apartment for the night. With two bottles of local wines conversation flows until deep into the night, especially about what did and what didn’t work well in Can and Ayse’s EVS.
After a long and lazy breakfast the next morning, we first go to the Tapolca Cave, to get a guided tour through the Karst museum and then do a little canoe trip through the cave itself.
With a short stop in a nearby animal park we continue the trip in the afternoon to the Kehida thermal bath, where we soak the rest of the day in the warm water and just enjoy ourselves in the sauna area.
